INTERCONTINENTAL STADIUM. Chinese Taipei captures its first win at the XXVI 18U Baseball World Cup on Monday morning. The hosts defeated the Czech Republic 16-0 at Intercontinental Stadium in Taichung, improving to 1-1. The Czech squad suffered its second loss in as many games.
Chinese Taipei didn’t waste any time, scoring nine runs in the first frame and ended the contest due to 15-run mercy rule. Kuo-Hao Wu and Tzu-Chuan Liu each scored three times. Li Lin and Chia-Wei Yang drove in three apiece.
Martin Kalabek and Adam Hajtmar had the two lone hits for the Czech squad.
Chia-Ming Tu issued just two hits and a walk in five scoreless innings to pick up the win. He struck out three and faced just three batters over the minimum.
Lukas Ercoli struggled from the start, allowing six hits, eight runs and two walks in the first. He was replaced with two outs in the opening period. The relieving Josef Cihlar only was able to stop the bleeding for a short time and Chinese Taipei blew the score open.
Both teams will be back on the field on Monday evening. Chinese Taipei takes on Canada at Intercontinental Stadium. The Czech Republic moves to Taichung City Stadium for a matchup against Mexico.
