The Australian Baseball League (ABL) has created history, becoming the first Australian professional sporting league to include an international team from Asia that is based in Australia.
The new ABL club will be made up solely of South Korean players who are based and play all their home games in Australia.
Winterball Korea secures a minimum five-year commitment to have a Korean team in the ABL, starting with the upcoming 2018/19 season.
All 40 of their regular season games will be broadcast live in Korea, where baseball is the top spectator sport. ABL officials expect an audience of up to one million viewers per game that features the Korean squad.
Baseball Australia CEO Cam Vale noted said the Korean club will be beneficial for Australia and for every other team in the ABL.
The location of the new team will be confirmed in the coming weeks, along with details regarding the second expansion team, which would bring the league to eight teams, Baseball Australia officials stated.
Baseball Australia, the national governing body, and the ABL are both members of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC). Australia is currently No. 8 in the WBSC Baseball World Rankings.
