Chien, a right-handed pitcher, helped Chinese Taipei win the 2019 WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup, earning the win in the Final versus then-defending world champions USA.
Yu Chien, the MVP of the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup 2019, is eligible for the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) Draft. He is expected to be selected with one of the first three picks.
Playing overseas would have been the preferred choice of the righthanded pitcher. The travel limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic forced him to put this ambition on hold.
Chien went 6.2 innings for Chinese Taipei in the final of the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup against defending world champions USA. He allowed only three hits and struck out seven. Reliever Chen Po Yu earned his 2-1 win. It was his only start in the tournament. Chien didn't allow an earned run in the whole campaign.
Chien continued at Kainan University, where manager Guo Li Jianfu revealed that the young phenom's speed increased dramatically during the season and topped 150 Km/h (over 93 mph).
