Jiji Press Baseball and softball are likely to be included in the program for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Yoshiro Mori, chairman of the Tokyo organizing committee, suggested Wednesday.
“The tickets should sell well in Japan and candidate sports need to have lots of fans,” Mori said in a speech at a meeting sponsored by the Research Institute of Japan, a Jiji Press affiliate.
“In that sense, I think baseball and softball are promising sports” for inclusion in the Tokyo Olympic program, said Mori, former prime minister of Japan.
Baseball and softball, in which Japan is a strong contender, have been excluded from Olympic programs since the 2012 London Olympics.
