Sri Lanka set for maiden Asian Baseball Championship

The Sri Lankan National Baseball team will leave the island on the 30th of September 2017 to take part in the Asian Baseball Championship in Taiwan. 

Sri Lanka acquired direct qualification after succeeding in the West Asia Baseball Cup in Pakistan in the recent past.

Therefore, this year’s tournament will mark Sri Lanka’s maiden appearance and only 8 out of 27 teams were selected for the all-important tourney.

Groups

Group ‘A’ – Korea, Taipei, Philippines, Sri Lanka
Group ‘B’ – Japan, China, Hongkong, Pakistan

The tournament opener will be between Korea and Sri Lanka on the 2nd of October 2017. The 24 member Sri Lankan outfit will be led by Akalanka Ranasinghe with Sameera Rathnayake as his deputy. Head coach Malindu Hewage will be assisted by a Japanese and a local coach.

Manoj Fernando will accompany the team as the Head of Delegate while Dinesh Perera will be the manager.  In addition to the selection committee, chairman Subash Gunasinghe will also leave with the team.

The tournament will be a qualifier for the Asian Games and most probably the Olympic Games.
