Bangladesh baseball team leave for Sri Lanka

Bangladesh will take on Pakistan and Iran Tuesday and Wednesday respectively

A 23-member Bangladesh baseball team left here for Sri Lanka Saturday night to take part in the inaugural edition of the West Asia Cup. A total of six teams will take part in the six-day long tournament, organized by Sri Lanka Baseball Federation and Baseball Federation of Asia.

The details of the tournament were announced in a press conference Wednesday afternoon at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka. All the matches will be held in Colombo’s Japan-Sri Lanka Friendship Baseball Stadium.

The Lankans, Nepal and India have been pitted in Group A while Group B comprises Bangladesh, Pakistan and Iran. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals, scheduled for Thursday.

The final will take place Saturday while the third place playoff will be held Friday. Bangladesh will take on Pakistan and Iran Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

This is Bangladesh’s second ever participation in an international tournament after the Invitational Competition last year in April in Guwahati, Assam, India where they finished third. This tournament will also double up as the Asian Games Baseball Qualifiers where Bangladesh will get the opportunity to acquire ranking point.
